The ultimate killer and real reason for debt is compound Interest (interest paid on both the principal and on accrued interest).
People get into debt and stay there because of their inablity to delay gratification and the negative impact of Compound Interest.
There are Five skills/strategies needed to get and remain 100% debt free
- Know the Numbers (i.e., total debt, monthly cash flow, net worth)
- Earn more than you spend (cut expenses, earn more income)

While it may seem counterintuitive, you will achieve wealth and freedom faster by focusing on debt reduction first.
Two basic approaches to paying down debt:
- Snowball method – You start paying off the smallest balances first while paying the minimum on larger debts. Once the smallest debt is paid off you proceed to the next slightly larger debt. Effective for those who need quick wins to stay motivated. However, it takes longer to become debt free.
- Avalanche method – You pay off accounts with the largest interest rate first. Then you move to the next highest. Avalanche method will get you out of debt faster.
There are three success factors: 1) Skillset, 2) Mindset, and 3) Your Environments. Skillsets account for about 10% of your success with mindset (40%) and environments (50%) accounting for the majority. If you change your inner game (mindset) but not your outer game, the environments will pull you back into your old behavior.
Environments are stronger than willpower. Don’t rely on your willpower alone to get you out of debt and keep you there. Stay connected to a community of winners and leverage the environments to keep you on track.

Very few people have plans for how to spend, save and invest their money. If you don’t already have these plans, you need to develop them.
Managing your money is all about having a plan or process that motivates you and that you can stick to.
Take-Home Pay Should Be Allocated As Follows:
- 50-60% to Fixed Expenses (Rent/Mortgage, Utilities, Taxes, etc.)
- Minimum of 10% to Investments/Retirement Plans
- 5-10% to Savings (Long and short term savings)
- 20-35% to Guilt Free Living Money (casual spending and charity)
You must know your numbers and understand your True North (I.e., a very precise understanding of your expenses and income). Can't make smart decisions without knowing the numbers.
The numbers you must know:
- What is your total monthly expenses for each category?
- What is your income (less expenses)
Continuously analyze your numbers so you can adjust your spending to meet your fixed and variable expenses, either down or up. Automate your finances as much as possible. If you know when your money is coming in, you can automate payments to your retirement accounts and for bill payment. By allocating in advance, you save time and money.
Most people that don’t have a money management plan, do not manage their wealth. If you don’t manage your money, chances are you won’t have more money to manage.
Money Management Rules:
- Make commitment today to spend less than you make
- Be strict for the next 30 days (to demonstrate that you can do it)
- Pay off bad debt first (bad debt = very high interest rate debt)
- Reward yourself for achieving small goals – Spend some money on something that is going to make you feel great and remind you that you are capable of managing your money.
- Save and invest the rest
When investing, invest in something that you are interested in and passionate about, otherwise you won’t put in the effort needed to be successful. You get two types of returns from your investments, one monetary and other psychic (feel good about it).
Choose One of Two Options for Reducing Debt:
- Pay off a few small bills first to get into the habit of doing it.
- Take one larger debt and make significant and consistent efforts to pay it off.
It’s Important To Think About And Plan For Retirement:
- What will the cost of living be when you retire?
- What is the lifestyle you want to live?
- How much do you need to have in savings, investments, or in cash flow?
The 4th Pillar: Invest ▾
95% of investors don’t know how to invest properly or how to think about their investments properly. When investing, you need to start with your end goal in mind. Are you investing for retirement, for your kids college, for a special vacation or something else? Are you investing for the long term or the short term?
Once you have decided why you are investing, there are five things to consider:
- What are your goals?
- Where do you want to invest?
- What are the critical factors that are important to you?
- What are your behavioral and emotional biases?
- How do you select your advisors?
If you don’t start out with your reason why and with an outcome in mind, it’s hard to develop a strategy for investing. Save and invest based on your values. Once you have chosen a goal, then you choose the investment opportunity to match your end goal.
Invest in things that you have a passion or interest in. If you are investing in things that you have a passion for, you will spend the time and energy to make wise decisions.

- What is your timeline? Are you looking at the short term or long term?
- How much risk are you willing to accept. Generally the greater the risk, the higher the return.
- Behavior & Emotional Biases (overconfidence, hindsight bias, regret avoidance, how you view yourself in respect to success and failure, over or underestimating value)
- Finding Qualified Unbiased Resources
Factors to consider when selecting Financial Advisors:
- How compensated
- Credentials
- Experience
- Resources
- Philosophy
The 5th Pillar: Protect ▾
Think about how you can protect your assets from:
- Personal liability (e.g., divorce, auto accidents, debt, foreclosure, etc.)
- Business liability (e.g., “slip & fall” accidents, trademark infringement law suits, sexual harassment accusations, faulty products, etc.)
You Need To Start Early By Understanding:
- The specific laws in your country, state or residency
- The differences between protecting our personal assets and your business assets and liabilities
- What are the best legal vehicles to safeguard your assets?
You Need To Use Legally Approved Asset Protection Strategies:
- For Personal Assets: trusts, wills/estate planning, gifting laws, stop losses on stocks/bonds, and insurance policies.

Write down your goals for the next 12 months, six months, three months and get emotionally involved with them. Make them very specific and measurable. (Doing this will make you 50% -100% more likely to achieve them)
In your calendar, set aside one hour every month to review your goals and progress.
Spend 30 minutes every week to focus on goals that you have broken into smaller goals for each day of the week.
Each day invest 15 minutes to focus on the goals you want to achieve that day. Ask yourself, what are three things I can do today to move forward on each of my goals?
Create a plan. Develop Strategies, Tactics and Timelines.
For every hour of planning that you do, you will save yourself 8-10 hours. Poor planning leads to poor performance. Whatever is worth doing, is worth measuring. If you don’t own a business and want to make more money, ask yourself these questions:
- Do I want to start a business?
- Do I want to freelance and help someone else grow their business?
- Can I get a raise by increasing my skills & knowledge?
- Can I write a book or create a program about something that I have a passion for?
- Can I create an online site and charge a fee for access?
- Can I invest my money in stocks, real estate or other investments?
YOU HAVE TO THINK OUTSIDE OF YOUR BOX
Part 2: Choosing Your Highest Income & Highest Impact Activities
Get clear on the outcome you want to achieve. Chunk your time into 20-90 minute blocks and then do one thing to completion (or as far as you can get). Do your most important critical activity in the your highest productivity part of your day. For most people that is early in the morning after they have arrived at work. Break your day into zones based on your energy during each time period.
Overall Approach:
- Create a Generalization List – Write down all ideas that you get, anything that pops up for how you can achieve your goals. Keep them all in one list.
- Organize the list – Break it up into categories (Business, Financial, Health, Experiences, etc.)
- Prioritize – Which ones are critical? Which are urgent? Which are important? Which are trivial?
- Write all of your planned activities for each day on your Daily Results Planner, recording them either as crucial, urgent, important or trivial.
Critical and urgent activities are those that are in your way and holding you back from achieving your goals. They are the strategies and tactics that will get you to the finish line. They are the activities that will give you the biggest results. Do important activities first, and if you have time, then do the trivial. Don’t confuse activity with productivity. Activity is busy work. Productivity moves you towards your goals and dreams. Pareto’s Law: 20% of what you do will yield 80% of your results. Ask yourself, what are the highest impact or money generating activities you should be doing? What will give you the biggest return?
Part 3: Getting Aligned Spiritually, Emotionally, Mentally & Physically
You can't do it all and you can't do it all now. You can get it done but not all at the same time.
When feeling overwhelmed, ask yourself:
- Do I have to do it myself?
- Can I delegate it?
- Can I defer it to later?
- Can I delete it?
Everything that you do is not worth the same amount of money and won’t have the same impact on your success. Play to your strengths and defer or delegate some activities to others. If someone asks you to help them, make your default answer NO. We all tend to overcommit. Consider getting an accountability partner. This is a person you agree to meet with at least weekly to discuss your goals and progress. You are more likely to follow through on what you have committed to doing, with another person than you will on a commitment you have made to yourself.
DO LESS BETTER TO COMPLETION • FOCUS ON PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION.
Take your big goal and break it into smaller goals and then focus on fractional goal achievement. When you do a lot of busy work but don’t make much progress on your goals, you get overwhelmed and lose energy. Take time to mindfully observe.
Part 4: Developing Your New Empowering Habits
How you start and end your day has a huge impact on your focus and attention. So develop daily rituals for optimum performance.
Recommended Daily Ritual: Each evening, ask yourself, what am I most grateful for today?
- Sit down and review your goals.
- Close your eyes and visualize achieving your goals and overcoming any obstacles.
- Take 15 minutes to fill out your daily results planner for the next day.
- Focus your first 90 minutes of the day on achieving your critical and urgent goals for that day. Your energy and productivity will be highest during this period.
- Make time for meditation.
